Value Chains – Analysing the value changes through successive stages of the supply chain

This webinar will offer participants an introduction to supply and value chains with a focus on agri-food products.

Agri-food supply and value chains are important for Queensland’s economy since the state produces a very large variety agri-food products (e.g., meat, grain, horticulture products, seafood) which are distributed to domestic and international markets. Understanding the structure and processes of supply chains offers stakeholders such as producers, industry associations, and government the opportunity to identify issues and opportunities linked to the distribution network of agri-food products (e.g., value creation, risks, inefficiencies). This understanding will help individual industries to increase the resilience of their agri-food system and to create value within the distribution network which will benefit income generation for rural economies.

The presentation will provide an introduction to definitions and theoretical concepts on which supply and value chains are founded. It will offer an overview about the importance of collaborations within a supply chain. Approaches to assess agri-food supply chains will also be presented supported by examples. The webinar will provide the opportunity to discuss the future role of agri-food supply chains for Queensland considering the challenges experienced during the COVID-19 crisis.

In follow up to our successful Rural Economic Development courses in 2019 and in conjunction with our partners CQUniversity, USQ, UQ and James Cook University, the Rural Economies Centre of Excellence will offer a series of economic development training courses throughout 2020.

Our intention is to build on the foundations laid by the initial training courses that were offered around the state in 2019.

The program is aimed at people working with economic development issues in regional Queensland, with more specific aims including:

1. Offer more targeted training that follows on from the introductory programs in 2019

2. Make the courses accessible to a broad range of people across regional Queensland

3. Build awareness and familiarity of different economic tools

4. Providing skills development for professionals especially those working in and with rural and regional communities

Virtual Mode of Offering

The courses will be offered in virtual mode by Zoom and via link provided once the participant is registered.

Each session will involve a one hour lecture, followed by another hour of discussion, examples and exercises.

This will be streamed from CQU Rockhampton and other locations such as Cairns, Toowoomba and Brisbane. Anyone with an internet connection should be able to participate however we will limit registrations to a maximum of 40 participants per session so as to allow for active participation in the Q & A section of the webinar.

Introducing the Presenters: Dr Peggy Schrobback & Assoc Prof Delwar Akbar, CQUniversity

Peggy Schrobback is Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the field of resource and environmental economics at CQUniversity. Peggy’s key interests are fisheries, aquaculture and agriculture/food production. She has also work on projects that focus on land and coastal management, such as water allocations for irrigated agriculture in the Murray-Darling Basins and the sustainability of freight ports. Peggy has experience in working collaboratively with research institutions, governments and industries.

Peggy is currently involved in investigating horticulture producer’s willingness to become engaged in supply chain collaborations which may focus on the export of horticulture products from Queensland. Increased export supply chain collaborations are expected to increase the return which farmers receive for their products. Findings of this study will provide an improved understanding about under which circumstances (e.g., price expectation, production volume, length of contract agreement, additional costs and level of extra paperwork) supply chain collaborations may be successful and what type of external facilitation may be needed.

Peggy has recently also developed a supply chain assessment framework, which can be used by decision makers to describe, analyse and compare agriculture and seafood supply chains in a methodical manner. This is framework is useful in identifying issues and opportunities of different supply chains at an industry level in a systematic way. Peggy is in the process of applying this framework to supply chains of aquaculture and agriculture industries such as the oyster and pineapple industries in Queensland.

Delwar Akbar's research during the last decade has focused predominantly on rural and regional economics, value chain analysis, property and health economics, economic impact assessment and regional development. Assoc Profressor Akbar is experienced in integrated economic models with supply chain, health services and regional planning models. At RECoE within the value chain discipline, Delwar has been developing and testing collaborative business models that could boaster rural economic dynamics and international trade.
