Promoting Participation in Value Chains for Oilseed and Pulses in Malawi
This webinar will discuss the household and spatial characteristics that drive participation by smallholder farming households in value chains for oilseed and pulses in Malawi. It follows on from two recently published IFPRI policy notes, which discussed farmer participation in these value chains with specific references to groundnut, soybean, sunflower, common bean, cowpea, and pigeonpea. It will be argued that by directing increasing shares of their production to the market and, thereby, realizing greater incomes, smallholders can significantly accelerate local agricultural and rural economic development. Drawing on household survey and spatial crop suitability data, the webinar will discuss the potential for the location and types of smallholder farming households who might benefit most from commercial production of oilseed and pulse crops.
